Decor Wellness: designing spaces for emotional and physical well-being

In this fast-paced world, where every moment is filled with distractions, the importance of a place that allows our authenticity to flow has never been so necessary.

DECOR WELLNESS came to help rediscover home not just as a physical space, but as the epicenter of emotional, physical, spiritual well-being/ balance, showing that more than mere dwelling places, homes are spaces to bring balance, relieve stress, anxiety, and an invitation to live in harmony with who we truly are.

It’s fascinating how small changes can have significant impacts on our productivity and satisfaction:

Scientific evidence supports this approach. Research conducted in Australia shows how building a comfortable and healthy office environment can affect the physical and mental health of employees.

The study, which was published in “Frontiers in Psychology”, aimed to investigate the effects of wood color and wood coverage on employees’ aesthetic evaluation (sensory evaluation, satisfaction, and usage willingness) of their office environment.

Other data worth mentioning:

Environmental psychology research has shown that built environments with natural elements were more popular and evaluated more positively by people (Ulrich, 1983; Brandt and Shook, 2005).

Attention Recovery Theory (Kaplan and Kaplan, 1989) and Psychological Recovery Theory (also known as Stress Reduction Theory, Ulrich, 1991) propose that the introduction of natural elements into the built environment can effectively help people recover from psychological depletion and improve their psychological well-being more generally (Burnard et al., 2017; Li et al., 2022).

Specifically, Attention Recovery Theory states that natural views provide stimuli that activate indirect attention and restore the depleted attention system (Kaplan and Kaplan, 1989; Kaplan, 1995), while Stress Reduction Theory believes that natural environments can aid in recovery from stressful events, block negative thoughts, and turn emotions to the positive side, helping people to restore healthy cognition and behavior (Ulrich, 1983; Ulrich, 1991; Ulrich et al., 1991).

Returning to the study, it was found that wood has significant positive effects on people’s health, such as improving concentration and comfort and enhancing the sense of security.

From the results, it was found that people exhibit better sensory and aesthetic evaluations of wooden office spaces of light and medium wood colors and prefer wooden office spaces with low wood coverage, than those of dark wood color.

The reason for this is most likely that light and medium wood-colored furniture with higher brightness create wooden spaces that are bright, spacious, and relaxing.

These findings can help designers better meet employees’ expectations regarding wooden office spaces. Moreover, they can provide a useful reference for the rational use of wood, the optimization of office space design, and the design of restorative environments.

On the other hand, this study also provided crucial information on improving employees’ mental health from an interior design perspective, in light of the widespread issue of mental health in the workplace. Read more about the study HERE.

This principle, when applied to the home, reinforces my conviction that natural materials and designs that promote a connection with nature are essential to create spaces that revitalize and inspire!

Since college, the symbolic architecture classes with Professor Marcio Lupion opened my eyes to the truth that I now weave into every project: our spaces have the power to shape our lives. And Decor Wellness reinforces the power of environments over our daily experience, developing each space we inhabit as if it were an extension of ourselves.

I hold the view that home should reflect the people who live in it, a space that resonates with their true nature and supports daily activities. Therefore, I always highlight to my clients the importance of spaces that not only meet aesthetic needs but also foster deep connections with their own being.

Believe it, our environments influence our neural connections, affect our moods, and propel our journeys. Indeed, as you have just seen, neuroarchitecture even highlights how our environments play a significant role in our lives, shaping our experiences and behaviors.

Even more now, as in the past, people spend more and more time inside their homes and in enclosed spaces, making them a reflection of who we are, embracing our passions, our dreams, and our lifestyle, like a beacon that illuminates us and propels us to live with more freedom and well-being.

More than following strict rules, it is essential to incorporate what makes sense for us.

You may also discover that the way back home is, in fact, a journey towards your true self, because this is an experience that we all deserve to live.
